“Dark Forest” is the first book in the ‘Rosa Royals’, which is somewhere between a spin-off and a continuation of the ‘Russo Royals’. If you’re familiar with particularly the last book in that series, you’re definitely going to recognize the lead characters in this one. However, author Shanna Handel has done a very good job writing this book in such a way that you’ll be able to understand everything, even if you’re totally unfamiliar with everybody in it.Blair and her two younger sisters have been hiding out and living in the woods for more than a decade, without any parents for most of that time. For the most part, they live a very self-sufficient lifestyle. Aldo is the new head of the Russo mafia family. A simmering crime family crisis is getting ready to boil over, and he is determined to protect Blair and her sisters from being caught in the crossfire. Blair is extremely reluctant for the marriage Aldo demands happen between them. He’s trying to guide and protect the mafia family that’s his responsibility, provide protection for the three girls from the woods who have nobody else looking out for them, and convince beautiful Blair to trust him completely. Alpha-man Aldo had no hesitation at all to use domestic discipline as a way to persuade her that it’s in her best interest to cooperate with him.I thought this story was nicely written, and had a good balance of danger, intrigue, passion, humor and unexpected paranormal elements. Everything is described so clearly that I could picture it as if it was on a movie screen. The ending to this fast-paced story was good, but it also left me with multiple unanswered questions. I’m looking forward to enjoying the next book in this series, featuring one of Blair’s sisters and one of Aldo’s brothers! I am so excited that we got Briar and Aldo first, I've been dying for this story!Briar and her sisters live a quiet life in the woods...until the woods are no longer quiet.In comes Aldo to protect the girls, and marry Briar...but she's not having it.These two are the protectors of their families and they take it seriously.
